Beschreibung:

Two small miniatures from an illuminated manuscript Book of Hours, on parchment [north-east France, c. 1450] Two small arch-topped miniatures, edged in liquid gold frames: (i) male and female supplicants before a vast house-shaped reliquary, that in dull gold and bejewelled with coloured gemstones, and with an altar covered in white and blue cloths with gold embroidery, set within a gothic interior (and perhaps in error, on a grassy ground); (ii) God the Father enthroned, wearing the papal triple-crown and holding the keys of St. Peter, and clothed in blue robes edged in ermine, set within an interior with cutaways to each side revealing a grassy landscape and other buildings; each approximately 48 by 37mm., tiny scuffs to gold, else outstanding condition, laid down on mounts and in gilt frames (with Les Enluminures sale description of some years ago taped to back) The miniature here with the reliquary is notably detailed and shows a single male supplicant kneeling before a large and splendid reliquary, with two of his attendants or family members to the right of the scene. He is perhaps the original owner of the parent volume, and his presence suggests that this was one of the most important devotional images in that book. The gilded reliquary with its opulent encrustation of jewels may have existed and been known to the artist and the patron.
