Title: Typed Letter Signed by Bobby Jones to Gene Hitt discussing the Calamity Jane Author: Jones, Robert Tyre (Bobby), Jr. Place: Atlanta, GA Publisher: Date: February 20, 1969 Description: 1 pp. Typed Letter Signed "Bob Jones" from Bobby Jones to Gene Hitt of Santa Ana, California, dated February 20, 1969. On his Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. Atlanta, GA stationery. With original mailed envelope. The lot also includes: Dated 3/11/69. 1 pp. Typed Letter Signed from Gene Hitt to Bobby Jones in which he writes (in response to the letter below): "The first thing I would do if I could start my life over again would be to learn to write a letter to show my appreciation for a fellow that would take time to write and send me the wonderful information such as you have about your Calamity Jane Putter." And below this is a hand-written note signed "B.J." [Bobby Jones]. The note says: "I think you did pretty well." Bobby Jones writes to Gene Hitt, an acquaintance or perhaps just a fan: "The original Calamity Jane was given to me by Jimmy Maiden in 1920 when he was a pro at Nassau, Long Island. The head bore the rose mark of a Condy iron and was probably forged sometime around the turn of the century. The head also bore the mark of W. Winton, who was probably the man who completed the club with shaft and grip. In 1926, Spalding made a half dozen copies of this club, but these were for my personal use. I gave a few to friends, but substituted one of the copies for the original in my bag because it had become too light from continued polishing. Spalding, with my permission, first made Calamity Janes for the market in 1931. Sincerely Bob Jones." Lot Amendments Condition: Thin strips of white tape at top edge of verso of letter, a few faint yellow spots; very good. Item number: 255281
