Charles Eugene de Ujfalvy de Mezo-Kovesd (Karoly Ujfalvy von Mezokovesd) was born in Transylvania, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He settled in France, and taught Asian history and geography at the School of Oriental Languages. The Ministry of Education sent him on a mission to Russia, Siberia, Turkestan and Uzbekistan in 1876, and it was probably on these journeys that he recorded these images of locals in the region.
