Antonio de Ulloa was the first Spanish governor of Louisiana, taking office in 1766 only to be deposed by the French creole uprising in 1768. He was, however, an able scientist and a Fellow of the Royal Society. He made important contributions to astronomy and co-discovered platinum. The current work pertains to his time in Peru and Ecuador. The final hundred pages comprise six chapters devoted to American Indians, in translation: "Of the Customs and Manners of the Native Indians"; "A Comparison of their peculiar Traits with those of other Nations"; "A Treatise on the Religion of the Aborigines"; "A Notice of the Antiquities discovered in the Country"; "An Account of some of the Writings of the Indians; and of some Figures in the Form of Idols"; and "Of the Language of the Indians, and the Manner in which these countries were peopled."
