Amsterdam and Leipzig: Arkestée and Merkus, 1752. 2 volumes, 4 o (249 x 201 mm). 2 engraved frontispieces and 56 engraved maps, plans and views, many folding (a few with slight creasing or short tears along fore-edge). (Some occasional pale spotting, generally very crisp and clean.) Contemporary French half calf, spines gilt (some light wear at extremities). FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. According to Sabin, no copies were printed at Paris (which appears in the imprint in some copies), but all were printed in Amsterdam and Leipzig by Arkesée and Merkus. Ulloa and Juan were attached to a French expedition organized by the Académie des Sciences to South America, as "two of the most scientific" (Sabin) officers of the Spanish navy. Along with La Condamine (see lot 75), they measured 3 degrees of latitude to prove the earth was flat at the poles. After long and varied journeys, the two were back in Spain by 1746 and began to compile the present work, Juan taking charge of the scientific observations and Ulloa the historical aspect of the expedition. It was first published in Madrid in 1748--misleadingly, some copies of the French edition bore a Parisian imprint. THE WORK INCLUDES THE EARLIEST RECORDED REFERENCE TO THE "AURORA AUSTRALIS." Sabin calls for 45 plates, and copies are recorded in American Book Prices Current with totals ranging from 45-55. This edition contains 7 plates more than the first edition.
