An outstanding campaign group of three medals comprising Indian Wars, First Type Campaign Medal No.141 (adopted GO 12, 1907), Army Philippine Campaign Medal No.268 (GO 5, 1905), and Army Spanish War Medal No.158 (GO 5, 1905), all verified to Lt. Colonel Francis B. Jones who retired in April 1904 as Chief Quartermaster after nearly forty-two years of service. All three medals are in their original numbered box of issue. Also with the medal group are a number of related items including a Fourth of July celebration red/white/blue ribbon with period eagle at top that reads, “Fourth of July/Tientsin, China.” Eight numbered crossed rifles. Twelve Indian War eagle I buttons, ribbon bars, parade dress ribbons, rank insignia, and assorted papers, including a hotel bill for the Astor Hotel in Tientsin, China. Francis Bacon Jones (1837-1921) first entered the army in August 1862 at 1st Lieut., 149th Pa. Inf. During his lengthy Civil War service he was wounded twice, at Gettysburg (gunshot wound left leg) and Laurel Hill (gunshot wound right leg), mustering out as Capt. in April 1865. He then briefly served as Lt. Col. of the late war 215th Pa. until July 1865. Jones applied for a commission in the Regular Army and joined as 2nd Lieut., 19th Inf. in May 1866, later transferring to the 37th Inf. with a promotion to 1st Lieut. in July 1868. During the height of the Indian Wars, Lieut. Jones was assigned to the 3rd Inf. from August 1869 and attained the rank of Capt., AQM in April 1885 after sixteen years. He was promoted to Major, QM in October 1897. With the advent of the Spanish-American War, Jones was advanced to Lieut. Col. of Volunteers, Chief QM in May 1898. He was assigned to duty as Superintendent of the Army Transport Service at New York from January 1899 to August 1900 charged with government funds for fitting out emergency army transport vessels while simultaneously letting contracts, supervising, and paying local contractors. A subsequent government audit alleged certain irregularities in December 1902 and July 1903 which were formally referred to the Federal District Court by the Secretary of the Treasury for adjudication. Finally in November 1906, Lt. Colonel Jones was formally absolved of any deliberate wrong doing, although certain errors of omission were noted in the official transcript. Meanwhile, Lt. Colonel Jones had retired by statute in Oct. 1901 but seems to have temporarily retained his “active” status during the initial legal proceedings. Jones was then formally entered on the retired list at Lt. Col., RA in April 1904. A member of the New York Commandery of MOLLUS, Lt. Col. Jones died at Daytona Beach, Florida on December 22, 1921. His New York Times obituary states that he was buried with military honors in the Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn. Condition: Good to very good.
