Ellsworth is remembered as the first Union officer, and first conspicuous casualty, to die in the American Civil War. He was killed while removing a Confederate flag from the Mashall House Inn in Alexandria, VA. Prior to the war, he had led a touring military drill team known as the "Zouave Cadets of Chicago." As a young man, he had moved to Springfield, IL to study law under Abraham Lincoln and he would later aid in the 1860 presidential campaign and accompany the newly-elected Lincoln to Washington D.C. After his death, Lincoln eulogized him as "the greatest little man I ever met" and the phrase "Remember Ellsworth" became a call to arms for the Union Army.
