Phil Hanna in Zamorano 80 states: "A Curious account of Miller's life and experiences with the Indians of Northern California, largely devoted to his quixotic attempt to form an Indian republic among the Pit River Indians, the Klamaths, Shastas, and Modocs, and of his participation in the so-called Pit River Massacre."
