Beschreibung:

Nice example of a Civil War Model 1850 Foot Officer's sword. The blade stands out with beautiful patriotic frosted designs towards the center on each side of the blade. The obverse blade is marked "U.S." and the reverse is adorned with an attractive spread winged federal eagle that features a banner that reads "E Pluribus Unum" gripped in its talons. The spine is marked "Iron Proof" and such markings were prominently featured on many of the swords that were imported from Solingen, Germany. The brass hilt features an ornate guard with delicate open foliate and floral scrollwork. The grip features a grooved, center-swelled wooden handle wrapped in high quality rayskin. The skin is tightly bound to the grip with double-twisted brass wire that fits neatly in the grooves of the handle. The brass pommel is decorated with more foliate motifs and features a tiered cap. The sword is complete with its leather scabbard that features brass mounts with 2 carry rings as well as a brass drag. CONDITION: The blade has been very well preserved and retains its original polished bright sheen. There are slight areas of pitting along the spine and there are no dings in the edge. The grip is in good condition and the brass wire is slightly loose. The guard exhibits a nice dark patina. The black leather scabbard remains strong exhibiting little evidence of cracking. The brass mounts appear to have been repaired and resoldered to the scabbard. The brass components all exhibit a dark patina. Overall very good. JLD Item Dimensions: 38 - 1/2" Name Value Blade Length 31 - 1/2" Overall Length 37 - 1/2" Paperwork
