.54 caliber. 9.125" round barrel secured by a single barrel band. SN: NSN. Browned finish, color casehardened lock, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock pistol. Lock in original flint and unaltered and marked S. NORTH / U {Spread-Winged Eagle} S / MIDLN CONN with the upper and lower lines forming a cartouche around the eagle. Breech marked P / US and with an RJ inspection above the touchhole. Counterpane with the soft script LS cartouched of Luther Sage. Pistol with single double strapped barrel band secured by a Wickham's improvement stud, barrel with brass blade front sight. Wood ramrod is a good looking but incorrect replacement. 19,374 of these pistols were produced by Simeon North between 1817 and 1820. This was the first of the standardized US military pistols to made in large quantities. These guns saw heavy use over the next couple of decades and many were even altered to flint in the 1840s and 1850s. This is a particularly nice example with some nice original finish that remains in original flint that is far to superior to most examples encountered for sale today. Condition: Very good to fine. Metal retains some strong traces of brown on the metal, particularly on the side plate. Metal with some scattered surface oxidation and some scattered light pitting. Markings in metal crisp and clear, softer in wood. Mechanically functional, good bore is moderately oxidized and and dark. Stock with scattered bumps, dings and mars. A far better than average example of an early US marital flintlock pistol.
