Traicté de la nature de l'oeuf des Philosophes . Paris: Pierre Moët, 1660, 1659. 3 parts in one volume, 8 o (166 x 98 mm). Engraved frontispiece, full-page engraved plate, and 12 inserted engravings illustrating each of the twelve keys in first work, separate title to each part, that for Azoth with large woodcut, and 14 woodcuts in the text, woodcut ornaments, head-pieces and initials. Contemporary French calf gilt (a little wear to joints). Provenance : acquired from Valette, 1973. Second edition in French, preceded by the very rare 1624 edition and an equally rare Latin edition of 1613. The twelve keys of the title are to unlock the doors of knowledge and unseal the secret of the fountain of youth. This edition is dedicated by the printer to the natural philosopher Sir Kenelm Digby, by virtue of his work on the 'Powder of sympathy', a form of sympathetic magic, current in 17th-century in Europe, whereby a remedy was applied to the weapon that had caused a wound in the hope of healing the injury it had made. This copy, as with the BL and Wellcome Institute copies, includes the rare set of 12 engraved plates illustrating each of the twelve keys which are often lacking, and are not called for by Ferguson. Collated separately, the three works often accompany each other. Caillet 800 note and 802, 798, 1043; Duveen 48; Ferguson I:77 and 101; Wellcome II: 111 and 152.
