Brussels [but Amsterdam]: for the author [but A. Brancart], 1893. Large octavo (281 x 187 mm). Bound together with 10 plates by Van Maele, the first signed ‘Van Maele’ in pencil in the margin. Red half morocco by P. Ruban, flat spine filled with flower ornaments applied in leather, lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, others with deckle edges. Provenance : H. Tulkens of Brussels (bookseller’s ticket). VAN MAELE'S RARE 'GRANDE SUITE DE LA LEGENDE', his large-format engravings inspired by Chambley, and one of his masterpieces, characteristically surreal, dark, and humorous. According to a book in preparation, Martin van Maele, le diable se cache dans les détails , Van Maele published his 'Grande Suite' in 1905 or 1906. The plates were issued separately and a complete set is rare. Here they are bound with Brancart's edition of the text. AE and ABPC record only one set of the large format plates: the Nordmann copy (his sale, Christie’s Paris, 27 April 2006, lot 411). Dutel 445.
