(A few quires lightly browned, title lightly spotted, a few tears repaired without loss, small tear in p. 267 repaired with very slight loss, Tt4 on guard, a few blank corners renewed, final blank Sss4.) Contemporary German vellum over thin pastepaper boards with yapp edges, blind-stamped with heads-in-medallion rolls and central and corner floral ornaments, red edges (without both fore-edge ties, rubbed, rebacked, a few other neat repairs). Provenance : Ferdinand Felicius, unidentified count (inscription on front pastedown); 17th-century notes in German on flyleaves and in a few quires; F.Z.M. Hauslab (1798-1883, bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ILLUSTRATED COSTUME BOOK. Vecellio (1521-1601), a cousin of Titian and active in the master's workshop, illustrates 353 European (including Russian, Balkan, and Turkish) costumes and 59 examples of Asian and African dress. Venetian dress and habits are fully explored, and are accompanied by 5 woodcut views of Venice and Venetian life.
