One full-page engraved emblematic illustration, 124 engraved emblems each within an oval woodcut frame, all by C.Boel. (Small rustmark on Q4.) Contemporary vellum, later lettering-piece on spine (somewhat soiled). Provenance : Thomas Rawlinson (1681-1725, 'C.& P.' collation mark on front pastedown); Thomas Philip de Grey, Earl de Grey (1781-1859, Wrest Park armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the English version, with a distinguished provenance. The charming engravings show Cupids encountering the various trials of Love. Van Veen published four polyglot versions simultaneously, of which the present version is the rarest. It is dedicated to William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke and his brother Philip Herbert, Earl of Montgomery, and has English verses by Richard Verstegan (née Rowlands) an Englishman of Dutch grandparents living in Antwerp.
