VEGA SICILIA Without any doubt, Vega Sicilia is and has for long been, the most renowned winery in Spain. Its reputation for quality and individuality preceeded that of Rioja, and it still holds a unique position in the Spanish hierarchy. Vega Sicilia can be considered to be the Lafite of the Iberian peninsular, a claim not so far fetched, in that the principal grape varieties grown and used are the classic Bordeaux cepages, a precedent created long before they became imported, planted and fashionable in the "New World" vineyards. The estate appears to be in the middle of nowhere. Its northern boundary is within walking distance of the river Duero, arid and sluggish in these upper reaches compared to the more tumultuous continuation as it crosses the border into Portugal. The vineyards, to the south, set amongst gentle rolling hills are in fact 2,000 feet above sea level. The soil, mainly limestone, is planted with the Bordeaux grape varieties, plus the Tinto fine and white Alibillo. The winery itself dates back to 1864 and parts have been very carefully and most tastefully restored. The traditions of wine making at Vega Sicilisa have scarcely altered with time. The top Unico wine spends an average of ten years in barriques, depending on the vintage. These small barrels are topped up once a week and racked every six months. The Valbueno wines, made from younger vines, spend three to five years in new casks.
