VERONA 1714 -- BENONI, Kav. Germano.
Padua: Stamperia del Seminario, 1714. 2 o (348 x 236 mm). 4 engraved folding plates, two each on two joined sheets by GIUSEPPE SCOLARI after ANDREA ZANONI (a few small repaired tears, some with cellotape). Original flexible paper boards (rebacked with paper). Provenance : Paola Trotti Taverna (signature mounted on pastedown). The Bishop of Verona, GIANFRANCESCO BARBARIGO (1658-1730), who for seven years occupied that position, was transferred on 25 August 1714 to the diocese of Brescia. This work, dated 9 September 1714, follows this transfer and recounts the transfer of the statue of Our Lady of Loreto from the church of S. Maria to San Nicolò. Teams of craftsmen worked for over two months to transform the interiors into dramatic theatrical forms: columns, boxes, balconies, damasks for decorations, angels in plaster, all illuminated by an incredible number of torches and candles. The ceremonies lasted from 3-7 November 1709. The apparati consisted of a huge box resting on a staircase, and two balconies that ran along the side walls of the church of San Nicolò. The detailed, large folding plate shows the interior of the church with architect ANDREA ZANONI's apparatus, and members of the Accademia Filarmonica playing music for a small gathering of witnesses. The fourth and final plate shows the fireworks display that accompanied the festivities. Berlin 3244.
