VIGNOLA, Giacomo Barozzi da (1507-1573). Regola delli cinque ordini d'Architettura. [Rome: 1563]. Engraved throughout: title, privilege leaf headed Pius Papa IIII , dedication and preface leaf, plates numbered IIII - XXXII. FIRST EDITION, first or second issue without the 6 unnumbered plates of doorways and a mantelpiece. Cicognara 416; cf. Fowler 351. Bound with: Antonio LABACCO (circa 1495-1559). Libro d'Antonio Labacco appartenente a l'Architettura. Rome: in Casa Nostra, 1559. Engraved title (small tear to lower blank margin), 8pp. letterpress (2pp. bound before plate numbered 33), 26 engraved plates including 3 double-page and 1 folding. The first edition appeared in 1552, and there are at least 4 issues of this 1559 edition: this is Fowler's issue (a) with letterpress text in italics. Cf. Fowler 165-166; cf. Cicognara 538. Bound with: Agostino VENEZIANO, Enea VICO and others. A COLLECTION OF 93 ENGRAVINGS. [Rome: A. Lafreri, A. Salamanca and others, circa 1530-1561]. Comprising: 10 leaves (numbered 71-80 in manuscript) with 21 plates of architectural details by Veneziano (9), the Master G.A. with the Caltrop (1), Sebastiano Serlio (2) and others; 9 double-page or folding leaves (numbered 83-100 in manuscript) with 9 plates of buildings in Rome by Nicolas Beatrizet (2) and others (3 shaved, 1 torn at fold); 6 leaves (numbered 101-106 in manuscript) with 12 plates of imaginary architectural cartouches numbered in the plate 2-13; 14 leaves (numbered 109-122 in manuscript) with 14 plates of 16 reverse copies of designs by Enea Vico; 16 leaves (numbered 123-138 in manuscript) with 16 plates of the set of imaginary martial trophies by Enea Vico; 1 double-page leaf (numbered 139-140 in manuscript) with 1 plate showing 2 examples of carved foliage (somewhat soiled); 2 leaves (numbered 141-142 in manuscript) with 4 plates of caryatids by Veneziano (upper margins a little dampstained); 10 leaves (numbered 143-152 in manuscript) with 10 plates of Roman vases by Veneziano (upper margins a little dampstained); 4 leaves (numbered 153-156 in manuscript) with 4 plates of vases/candelabra (upper margins a little dampstained). 2° (398 x 260mm.). 18th-century English calf, spine gilt (worn). Provenance : A. Despiles (first title inscribed three times in an early hand 'A despiles et ses amis'); Robert James Petre 8th lord Petre (armorial bookplate). This VERY FINE AND RARE COLLECTION of plates appears to have been assembled about 1563 (the date of the Vignola), possibly by Despiles, and then rebound for Lord Petre in about 1740. A number of the later engravings (on leaves numbered 71 onwards) are close-cut and mounted to size and where a leaf shows 2 or more plates the leaf is generally made up from an equal number of sheets carefully pasted together. The manuscript numbering is a little erratic: leaf 70 is a blank and there are no leaves numbered 81, 82, 107 or 108. The lot sold not subject to return.
