VIKING COINS - HARTHACNUT - LUND / AELFWEARD - AGNUS DEI PENNY 1035-1042 AD Copied from Aethelred II, BMC type xi (circa 1009 AD). Obv: Agnus Dei right on beaded panel below with 'alpha-omega' inscribed, with +HARÐA.CVN:.T RÆX DAN legend. Rev: Holy Dove flying with +AL.FPAD:.ON LVN.DE:.MAE: legend for a moneyer Aelfweard at the Danish mint of Lund. 1.45 grams. Near very fine; small piercing at edge. Extremely rare. Literature Jensen, Tunsindtallets Danske Mønter/Danish Coins from the 11th Century, Royal Collection of Coins and Medals, 1995, p.58, pl.19, third coin (die duplicate); see Hauberg, Myntforhold og Udmyntninger, 1900, pl.IV, 4 (for an example, apparently from the same dies); see Ruckser, The Coins of Denmark, p.25 (die duplicate; stated here to be unique in private hands, the Bruun Rasmussen coin). Footnotes A specimen, said then to be the only example in private hands, fetched 16,000 euros through Bruun Rasmussen, Copenhagen, 11 December 2006.
