The Petersburg Daily Express. Extra … Latest from Corinth! Halleck and His Hirelings Refuse Battle! … Brilliant Victory in the Valley of Virginia
Petersburg, VA: [A. F. Crutchfield], 10 May 1862. 1 p., newspaper broadsheet (390 x 195 mm). Text in three columns. Contemporary pencil inscription in the right margin: “It is said this (Saturday) afternoon that Norfolk was occupied this morning by the enemy. The impression is that there are no gun boats now in James River. The Richmond paper of this morning say so. They are obstructing the James and Appomattox.” Condition : minor toning, ink marks on verso visible recto. unrecorded confederate newspaper extra, with a contemporary manuscript note on the fall of norfolk. This issue of the Petersburg Daily Express includes news relating to three different battles: the First Battle of Corinth (29 April -10 June 1862), the Battle of McDowell (8 May 1862) and the Battle of Williamsburg (5 May 1862). The reporting of victory at Corinth is exaggerated, as Hallack’s forces were in fact steadily advancing, eventually entering Corinth on 30 May. However, the second battle described here, the Battle of McDowell, is of particular note as it is often seen as the beginning of Stonewall Jackson’s Valley campaign. The extra includes a newspaper report from Richmond, as well as a printing of a short despatch from Jackson. Almost two columns of this issue relate to the Battle of Williamsburg, including a list of the killed and wounded.
