Woodcut title-page, 162 illustrations (2 folding, many full-page), head-pieces, six-line initials (one corner of title-page renewed, some browning and spotting). (A2-3 renewed at gutter, some browning, some pale stains in the margins, two tiny holes in 2H3, lacking 2H4.) Contemporary sheep, spine in seven compartments, gilt-lettered morocco label in one, others elaborately decorated in gilt (worn at the corners and head and foot of the spine, surface abrasions). Provenance : A.L. Huette (contemporary signature). Second edition of the first complete French translation first published in 1547 and profusely illustrated. Besides schematic architectural illustrations, the woodcuts include complex Renaissance ornaments, graceful scenes and theatrical stage settings in Italian perspective. Most of them are the work of Jean Goujon (died ca 1567), while the larger initials are attributable to Jean Cousin (ca 1490-ca 1560), two artists who together decorated the Château d'Anet.
