WAGNER'S RELATIONS WITH LUDWIG II. Düfflipp is very often the conduit for brief messages, presents or other enclosures for the King (including a number of volumes of the Gesammelten Schriften ): in the earliest letter the enclosure (not present) is a newspaper cutting comprising 'einen nicht unwichtigen Brief von mir über die Gründe meines Nicht -Kommens nach Paris (zur Aufführung meines Rienzi)'; in 1872 although disappointed in his desire to convey birthday wishes to the King in person, he asks Düfflipp to present two gifts -- the last act of Götterdämmerung and a portrait medallion of himself. In October 1870 he asks Düfflipp to arrange permission from the directors of the Königliche Hoftheater for the musical scholar Gottlieb Federlein to inspect the autograph score of Die Walküre , explaining that Federlein's work on Rheingold is 'one of the best to have been written towards an understanding of my works'. As well as the business of patronage, the letters are full of personal affection ('Da ich von Ihnen gar nichts mehr höre -- was mich recht traurig macht ...'); a number of letters on fleeting visits to Munich show a touchingly earnest desire to see Düfflipp, inviting him in one, although his time is much taken up with having his likeness taken, to share 'das einfache Mahl, welches ich heute um 5 Uhr (auf meinem Gasthofzimmer) für meinen bildenden Künstler bestellt habe'; the last letter in the series gives the warmest possible invitation to come to Bayreuth -- 'Ihr Stübchen würde schon brav geheitzt'. APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED AND UNKNOWN. These letter are not among the 180 letters to Düfflipp between February 1867 and October 1877 listed in Breig, Dürrer & Mielke, Wagner Briefe Verzeichnis (1998). The majority of the listed letters are in the Bayerische Hauptstaatsarchiv, Geheimes Hausarchiv, Munich. (15)
