WAKELY, Andrew (fl. 1631-65). The Mariners-Compass rectified. Containing Tables shewing the true hour of the Day, the Sun being upon any Point of the Compass: with the true time of the Rising and Setting of the Sun and Stars... And Tables of Amplitude. London: W. Godbid for G. Hurlock, 1669.
WAKELY, Andrew (fl. 1631-65). The Mariners-Compass rectified. Containing Tables shewing the true hour of the Day, the Sun being upon any Point of the Compass: with the true time of the Rising and Setting of the Sun and Stars... And Tables of Amplitude. London: W. Godbid for G. Hurlock, 1669. 3 parts in one, 8 o (150 x 93 mm). Woodcut illustrations. (Lower blank? portion of title trimmed away.) Contemporary sheep (minor rubbing to spine). Second (?) edition of Wakely's EXTREMELY RARE early navigational manual. "Wakely's Compass Rectifier consisted of two concentric circles made of board, each marked with the rhumbs. The inner board could be rotated and when turned in accordance with the magnetic variation allowed the observed rhumbs to be read as true rhumbs" (Taylor). The astronomical tables are dated 1668 and the title of A Table containing the most and chiefest Harbours is dated 1669, it is probably safe to say that the ink correction of the title changing it from 1659 to 1669 was done ether by the publisher or by an early owner. The earliest copy recorded in Adams & Waters is dated 1665 and it is noted that Taylor erroneously assigns the first printing to 1633. VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current , no 17th-century edition of this work has sold in the past 25 years. Adams & Waters 3637; Taylor Mathematical Practitioners 159. See Crone 244 (1665 edition); see Wing W-273 (1665 edition).
