Contemporary speckled calf, spines gilt (joints cracking, spines dry, some wear at extremities). Provenance : Graham E. Hamond (ownership signature on front pastedown dated "1815," armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the memoir of George Walker the most successful British privateer. Walker, commander of the merchant ship William that traded from London to South Carolina, recounts his experiences protecting the North and South Carolina coasts from Spanish privateers in 1740-1742. The British government employed Walker during the war with France in 1744 to capture French and Spanish ships cruising the Atlantic with enormous amounts of cargo. Commanding a squadron of four ships collectively known as the Royal Family, Walker and his men succeeded in capturing about £400,000 worth of goods by the end of the war. Howes W-36; Sabin 101044.
