WALLIS, James (1785?-1858). An Historical Account of The Colony of New South Wales and its dependent settlements . London: J. Moyes for R. Ackermann, 1821.
WALLIS, James (1785?-1858). An Historical Account of The Colony of New South Wales and its dependent settlements . London: J. Moyes for R. Ackermann, 1821. 2 o (464 x 325 mm). Half-title, leaf mentioning the Sydney Gazette's praise of Wallis. 12 engraved plates by Preston after Wallis (6 double-page), one lithographic sketch map by Ackermann after Oxley (all mounted on guards) (map slightly shaved along right edge, some pale spotting). Modern calf antique; slipcase. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT SERIES OF EARLY AUSTRALIAN VIEWS. This famous series follows the Absalom West series of engravings as the next important set of scenes in the colony; the two are further connected by the fact that the engraver Preston worked on them both. Wallis was the first of a number of military officers with a talent for drawing to come to the colony. He arrived on the same ship which brought Joseph Lycett as a convict. The two were later together in Newcastle where Wallis ran the penal settlement between 1816 and 1818. Wallis returned to England in 1819 and organized the publication of this book. The text states (incorrectly) that "The engravings in this Volume are curious and interesting, as being the first specimen of the graphic art which this infant community has produced." They were in fact preceded by Lewin's Birds and Lepidopterous Insects . According to the text, the images were engraved on plates fashioned from "common sheet copper which is employed for coppering the bottoms of ships." The present copy includes the text; the plates were also issued as individual views in Australia, and also as a collection, without text, in London. Ferguson 842; Wantrup 217b (see also pp.285-289).
