WALMESLEY, D. Charles. Analyse des Mesures des Rapport et des Angles: ou reduction des Integrales aux Logarithmes, et aux Arcs de Cercle.Paris, G. F. Quillau, 1749 4to, 250x200 mm; contemporary full calf binding, spine with 5 ribs and with gilt title and ornaments, red edges, marbled endpapers; pp. 4 nn., [3], 4-445, 5 nn.; 4 folded copper plates out text in the end. Excellent copy.
First edition. The English mathematician, who had engaged with French astronomers in a dispute over the 'three-body problem' and the moon's apse, proposed to make the theories set out in Cotes's book “Harmonia Memsurarum” available to the public. This work, which Walmesley calls it "rare et peu lu", was published posthumously in 1722 and developed the application of the integral calculation to the conical sections on the basis of the Newtonian tables of De Quadratura Curvarum. The volume also contains the important Théorie du Mouvement des Comètes', presented to the Académie des Sciences in 1747, and updated here to include a orbite analysis in 1748. Sotheran: “Rare. An extension and explanation of Cotes’s Harmonia Mensurarum.” Poggendorff, II, 1256; Quérard, X, p. 477; Sotheran I, 5179. The lot is offered with a valid export license.
