Odobenus rosmarus Cold Artic Seas of the Northern Hemisphere There are at least two subspecies of walruses, the Atlantic Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus and Pacific Odobenus rosmarus divergens. A third subspecies - Odobenus rosmarus laptevi - has been suggested, though not completely accepted. The Pacific Walrus is larger than the Atlantic and has a wider skull with longer tusks; neither is able to breed with the other. The present fascinating tusk specimen is from a diseased animal. The upper portion of the tusk exhibits aberrant growths while the skull around the tusk displays a massive portion of excess bone growth. An excellent educational piece and a unique display specimen.
