A small oblong, 7/8 x 3 3/8 in., neatly tipped to a sheet of engraved stationery with vignette of American eagle, headed "United States Consulate Leipsic." In fine condition. On page 3 is a full-page calligraphic certification by Dr. T.G. Flugel, U.S. Consul, Leipsig, 26 January 1847, explaining that the present signature of Washington was among certain "signed blank orders...found among his papers by Jared Sparks, Professor...at Harvard University...Six of these signatures were enclosed in a letter from Mr. Sparks to me..." An interesting illustration of the activities of the well-known early collector Jared Sparks (1789-1866), who was also responsible for the dismembering of the manuscript of Washington's discarded first inaugural address.
