"IT IS THE TOTAL RUIN OF FRANCE" A vivid account by an anonymous commentator present in Napoleon's entourage: "...About 8 o'clock..Napoleon seeing that his army was nearly beaten began to despair of the success, which two hours before he believed assured. He remained on the field of battle until half past nine... Assuring themselves of a good guide they passed to the right of Jennappes - by the fields: we marched all the night, without knowing where we were going, until about 4 o'clock in the morning we reached Charleroi where Napoleon owing to the pressure of the army, which was fighting as it retreated, had great difficulty in passing...he found in a field a small bivouac fire made by some soldiers. There he stopped and warmed himself and said to General Corbineau - Well, Monsieur, its a fine piece of work that we have done. General Corbineau replied, with a bow, Sire, it is the total ruin of France. Napoleon turned away and shrugged his shoulders and reflected a few instants. He was at this moment extremely pale and so much altered as to make one fear...".
