WEDDELL, James (1787-1834). A Voyage Towards the South Pole, Performed in the Years 1822-24 . With Observations on the Probability of Reaching the South Pole, and an Account of a Second Voyage Performed by the Beaufoy, Captain Brisbane, to the Same Seas . The scarce second edition, expanded to include Weddell's "Observations" and the account of Brisbane's voyage to Tierra del Fuego (with two maps and the two panorama plates of coastal views). Weddell reached further south than any preceding explorer. Both the Weddell Sea (which he discovered) and Weddell seals are named for him. Modern half calf over marbled boards, red morocco spine label (erasure to frontispiece and title; folding plates and maps with some closed tears at folds/stubs and some offsetting; spotting to first map).
