WELD, Isaac, Jr. (1774-1856). Travels through the States of North America, and the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada . London: John Stockdale, 1799. The first edition of Weld’s popular report on North America. During two years in America, Weld, an Irishman, visited major American estates including Mount Vernon and Monticello, and traveled through the forests of Canada with native guides. The lovely illustrations include three views of Niagara Falls, a "View of the Natural Rock Bridge in Virginia," and "Mount Vernon, the Seat of George Washington." Howes W-235; Lande 890; Sabin 102541; TPL 708. Quarto (263 x 206mm). Engraved frontispiece; 14 engraved plates; one folding map, handcolored in outline (light spotting and toning). Modern half calf over marbled boards. Provenance : Kansas City Public Library (stamp) – PBA Galleries.
