WELLINGTON, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of (1769-1852). Two autograph letters signed, the first (signed 'Arthur Wellesley') to Lord Hawkesbury, London, 13 June 1808, 2 pages, 4to ; the second (signed 'Wellington') to the Duchess of Gordon, London, 5 April 1839, 3 pages, 8vo ; and a document signed (as Lieut. Colonel, 'A. Wesley'), a Monthly Return of the 33rd regiment, Ysendoorn, 1 December 1794, one page, oblong folio . Wellington (promoted to Lieutenant General) writes to Lord Hawkesbury (Charles Jenkinson, later 3rd Earl of Liverpool), on matters relating to the command he offically assumed the following day, when he was given 9,000 men to assist the Spanish and Portuguese in the Peninsular War. As leader of the Tory Opposition in the Lords, he writes to the Duchess chiefly to explain the limitations of his powers of patronage, 'It is forgotten that I am the Man to whom every body must apply for every thing. The consequence is that I never can have the pleasure of gratifying an acquaintance'. The document (signed with the earliest form of his signature, 'Wesley') refers to his service in Holland, after he had purchased a majority in the 33rd foot in 1793. (3)
