Western Asiatic Cypro-Minoan Cylinder Seal with Genius Between Animals 14th-13th century BC A haematite cylinder seal, in the centre of the picture upright and head-on to the viewer, stands the Minoan 'genius', a human figure with face and ears of a lion, broad shoulders, narrow hip and long legs, in the attitude of the 'Lord of the animals', on the right this genius keeps with his angled arms a lion on a hind leg up, with the right hand he grabs an upright capride at the throat; above the genius a crescent moon, between genius and lion above a hand, below a star; between genius and capride above a star; left behind the capride stands a griffin half erect, over his own shoulder looking back to the left; between both a hand, the seven-star-symbol (Pleiades) and a pillow-shaped object; below the griffin stands a cylindrical symbol. Accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 6.72 grams, 23mm (1"). Fine condition. Provenance From a private collection of seals and amulets, the property of a Canadian gentleman living in London; from his father's collection formed in the late 1960s to 1980s.
