WESTERN ASIATIC SUMERIAN ALABASTER WORSHIPPER FIGURINE 2400-2200 BC A carved standing figure of a worshipper, hands clasped to the chest and beard resting on them, tufted kaunakes kilt, bare feet on a discoid base. 387 grams, 16cm (6 1/4"). Fair condition; surface eroded, hair partly absent. Provenance Ex Delorme and Collin De Bocage, Paris, 5 December 2009, Lot 5 (with a copy of the catalogue extract); formerly in a French private collection, and previously a London private collection. Footnotes Statues such as this were placed in temples before the image of the deity in order to pray perpetually on behalf of the person it represented, who was considered to be physically present in the statue.
