William H. Bell (1830-1910). Lot of four albumen prints, 8 x 10 in. mounted on larger cream colored sheets, 16 x 20 in. and 18 x 24 in. with War Department imprint as well as Explorations & Surveys West of the 100th Meridian and Lt. Geo. M. Wheeler, Commanding, each with a printed captions. Bell began his photography career as a daguerreotypist in Philadelphia. A verteran of both the Mexican War, was appointed Chief Photographer the United States Medical Museum. In 1872 Wheeler commissioned Bell to accompany him on his expedition. Included in this group are the following titles: Canon of Kanob Wash, Colorado River Looking South; Utah Series: Hieroglyphic Pass, Opposite Parowan, Utah No. 8.; Colorado River Series, Headlands, Paria Canon No. 31 and Entrance of Black Canon From Above No. 85. Condition: First tonally rich, mount with surface soiling; second tonally about 7.5, mt. with surface soiling; both remaining prints yellowed.
