PRESENTATION COPY, ADDITIONALLY INSCRIBED BY WHITMAN on the front free endpaper: "Alfred Webb, from his friend, the author." Webb, of Dublin, Ireland, is listed in Whitman's sales notebook on March 11, 1876, having purchased Leaves of Grass and Two Rivulets for $10 ( Daybooks and Notebooks , ed. W. White p.7). Although Whitman intended to publish 1,000 copies of this issue, only 100 copies were completed. The intercalations were intended to present the book "in its permanent form" ( Correspondence , ed.
