Original flexible maroon cloth, front cover and spine gilt-lettered, uncut (spine with small chip affecting title, slightly faded with ends and some edges a bit rubbed, sides a little soiled). Provenance : Lou Hunsiker Halladay, Anne M. Halladay (signatures on front free endpaper. FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING, one of 100 copies in this flexible binding, SIGNED BY WHITMAN on front free endpaper and dated 23 September 1889. These 100 copies were done at Whitman's expense for his own use for presentation; the remaining copies of the edition, about 1000, were bound in hard bevelled cloth and published and sold by McKay.
