Title: Wigwam and Warpath or the Royal Chief in Chains Author: Meacham, Hon. A[lfred] B. Place: Boston Publisher: John P. Dale & Co. Date: 1875 Description: xxiii, 700 pp. 20 wood engraved plates. 9x6, original green cloth stamped in gilt and black. First Edition. Alfred B. Meacham was Superintendent for Indian Affairs of Northern California and Southern Oregon during the period of strife between settlers and Indians in the region. He was the principle peace negotiator during the the “Modoc War” of 1872-73 and was wounded by Modoc Chief Captain Jack during the ambush at the Peace Tent. The illustrations are portraits of the principlss in the war, as well as "Sprited and Life-like Engravings, of actual scenes from Modoc Indian life, as witnessed by the author." This copy owned by Salem, Oregon, Judge L.H. McMahan, son of a pioneer Oregon family with his pencil notes throughout. Cowan (p. 421) says: “This work on the Modoc Indians was written by a most competent author on the subject, making the volume of great historic value.” Scarce. Lot Amendments Condition: Cover worn; rear joint split; corners worn with boards exposed; front free endpaper and blanks lacking; some signatures loose, fair and worthy of restoration.
