Rifle has a .54 caliber, Harpers Ferry lock dated 1852 barrel with the VP eagle markings and sub-inspector's initials. Walnut stock with brass patch box and bands, with original ramrod, and attached rear sight. This is a second style M1841 with the saber bayonet attachment; 10,286 were made at Harpers Ferry. This rifle was carried by F.W. Steuben of the 92nd Illinois Infantry, one of the units attached to the famed Wilder Brigade of mounted infantry. Lot also includes a sixth plate tintype of Steuben posed with the rifle, and a ninth plate ambrotype of Steuben posed waist up, and a small portion of a portion of an American flag with a single gilt star. Lot also includes an anonymous 8" x 10" early silver print on original card stock mount of 4 older GAR vets in front of a tent at a GAR encampment, inscribed in ink on rear Facing Left to Right George McElroy-F.W. Steuben and two unknown friends of F.W.S. All Civil War Veterans., 12" x 14". Steuben enlisted on September 4, 1862, and served with Co. H the remainder of the war before mustering out at Greensboro, North Carolina on June 21, 1865. Steuben was present at Chickamauga and throughout the Atlanta Campaign. Condition: All metal grey with rust spots caused from old heavy coat of grease. Brass hardware nicely mellowed from age. Wood cleaned a long time ago. No inspector's markings left in wood.
