Boston: Printed by Bartholomew Green, and J. Allen for Michael Perry and Benjamin Eliot, 1699. 12 o (137 x 80 mm). (Some minor pale stains, paper flaw on D1 affecting lower margin.) Contemporary speckled sheep over wooden boards (minor wear to corners). FIRST EDITION of this rare work by one of New England's most well-known Colonial clergyman. Reverend Samuel Willard was the son of a military and political leader born in Concord, Massachusetts, trained in orthodoxy and graduated at Harvard in 1659. He strenuously opposed the witchcraft trials and was also influential in halting the Salem witchcraft trials in 1692. He was a close associate of the Mathers and holds equal intellectual rank (see lot 88). Willard served as minister at Groton from 1663 to 1676, from where he was driven by the Indians during King Philip's War. He was pastor of the Third Church, Boston, from 1678 until his death in 1707. He played a leading role in the Reforming Synod of 1679, and at the end of his life was acting president of Harvard. Bartholomew Green was the chief printer of New England in his time, and the son of Cambridge printer Samuel Green. A VERY FINE COPY IN ORIGINAL CONDITION OF THIS EARLY AMERICAN IMPRINT.
