Aegyptica, or some account of the antient and modern state of Egypt,… accompanied with etchings, from the original drawings taken on the spot by the Late Charles Hayes . London: Printed for T. Payne, and Cadell and Davies by Richard Taylor 1809. 2 volumes, 4° (285 x 233mm) and folio atlas (460 x 300mm). Double-page map of Upper and Lower Egypt and 24 etched or aquatint plates by J. Powell, all folding or double-page, bound on stubs. (Text leaves uniformly browned, 1 folding plate split at fold.) Contemporary green calf, gilt bordered, gilt-panelled spines, red calf labels (corners rubbed.) Provenance : Sir Joseph Radcliffe (armorial bookplate) -- Harry Blackmer (book label). FIRST EDITION. THE BLACKMER COPY OF HAMILTON ' S MOST IMPORTANT WORK . All published of Hamilton’s survey of Upper Egypt with his observations of the country and antiquities. His 1801 mission was also to prevent the removal of antiquities by the French, most notably the Rosetta Stone. Atabey 553; Blackmer 4780.
