"This book was prepared to accompany a retrospective exhibition of the work of William Henry Jackson at the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art in Fort Worth, Texas. In the choice of photographs and their sequencing to be included in the exhibition, guidance was by esthetic feeling rather than strict chronology. While Jackson's early work has been seen more often, and is, therefore, better known than his post-1878 work, a substantial representation from the latter period has been selected for inclusion in the exhibition," from the preface.
