Large folio (13 x 8¾ in.), 4-page self-wrapper with English text on front cover, French text on back, enclosing a typescript "attestation" on stationery of the Belgian delegation, large red wax seal pendant on red, gold and blue silk ribbon, small pale stain from wax seal, otherwise in fine condition. The text on the front wrapper, printed within a decorative woodcut frame reads: "Peace Congress. Versailles 1919. Session of 28 June 1919. Agenda. Signature of the Treaty of Peace between the Allied and Associated Powers of Germany." The inside rear cover is SIGNED BY SEVENTEEN PARTICIPANTS IN THE CONGRESS including: Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George (Prime Minister of Great Britain), Georges Clemenceau (President of France), Ignace Paderewski (Polish delegate), Marquis Saionij (Japanese delegate), N.P. Pachitch (Serbian delegate), André Tardieu and Jules Cambon (French delegates), Charles Kramarcz (Czechoslovakian delegate), Marquis Imperiali (Italian delegate), Jean Bratiano (Romanian delegate), Paul Hymans, M. vanden Heuvel and M. Vandervelde (Belgian delegates) and Eleftherios Venizelos (Greek delegate). The attestation leaf, signed by B. de l'Escaille, a member of the Belgian Delegation, specifies the order in which the delegates signed the surrender documents (Lloyd-George was 1st, Wilson 5th, Clemenceau 10th). A SUBERB SOUVENIR OF THE VERSAILLES PEACE CONFERENCE, SIGNED BY MOST OF THE PRINCIPAL SIGNATORIES. The day of this signing marked the end of World War I and the adoption of the terms laid out in the Versailles Treaty (see lot 150). Wilson was instrumental in establishing the road to peace. He set forth his Fourteen Points in January 1918, in the conviction that they were the only basis on which lasting peace could be made. The Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918 and paved the way for the Paris Peace Conference and the eventual treaty.
