Blued metal finish with casehardening to frame and flat-wrist walnut furniture. Buttplate features a brass trapdoor and a compartment for storing cleaning rods which are not present with item. Top of tang displays partial model marking "EL 1873". First three letters removed when tang was drilled for a tang mounted sight. No such sight is present and hole through the letters "MOD" has been plugged. Underside of tang shows "B" suffix to serial number while underside of breechblock marked "38 CAL". Address and patent markings to top of barrel are weak but remain legible. Marks read "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN CT/KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866 OCTONER 16. 1860". Serial number indicates item manufactured in 1886. Nosecape missing retaining screw to left side. Screwheads for lever and dustcover show damage from disassembly. Condition: Good. Bore is dark with patina throughout and some residue midway down barrel. Overall metal finish is a dark brown patina showing some remaining finish to upper sides of receiver near dustcover. Brass breechblock is tarnished with firing and lubricant residue overall. Wood furniture has scratches, mars, and handling wear. Finish worn off in spots on buttstock. Right side of stock has a series of notches in it. Chip to right forend where it meets receiver. Action cycles and lever safety functions properly.
