Beschreibung:

Harry Roseland (American, 1868-1950), titled Wisdom of the Tea Leaves in plaque, signed and dated 21 l.r.; 31.5 x 38.5 in. A genre painter during the 19th and early 20th century, Harry Roseland painted realistic depictions of the contemporary world. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Roseland spent his entire life there. Largely self-taught, Roseland did receive some instruction from Thomas Eakins James Carroll Beckwith and J.B. Whittaker. Many of his most notable works captured scenes from the South after the Civil War, such as the example here. Like others by Roseland, this painting depicts African Americans in everyday activities. In addition to the fortune telling here, other works featured figures engaged in gossiping, reading or delivering letters, sewing and even people praying. Because Roseland's paintings were so popular, quite a number of them were reproduced as prints and featured in postcards and newspapers for public circulation. Condition: Small spots of inpainting throughout, especially on woman's right glove.
