Mead in rectangular punch (ca 1850, St. Louis, Mo.), this small cann has slightly flared foot with beading at lip and foot, finely made C scroll handle and is engraved on the front Presented To/C.A. Finley Smith/by/Surgeon C.A. Finley U.S.A., 2.6" diameter x 3.25" high, 2.48ozt. This cann was likely given by a proud grandfather to his namesake grandson. Colonel Clement Alexander Finley, MD, Surgeon General, US Army, 1861-1862. Finley, the son-in-law of President Zachary Taylor and brother-in-law to Jefferson Davis was appointed by Lincoln as the new Surgeon General not long after he took office. Finley did much to improve the Union Army Medical Corps, including the introduction of female nurses, but after a falling out with Stanton he was relieved of command in 1862. Condition: EXC.
