Beschreibung:

2 volumes. [2], vi, xxii, [2], 487, [1]; [2], 4, [4], 507, [3] pp. With 3 (of 4 folding engraved maps; 2 folding engraved plates. (8vo) 19.5x11.5 cm (7¾x4½"), later half morocco & marbled boards, spines lettered in gilt. First edition of Lockman's abridged translation of the Lettres Edifiantes et Curieuses, in which is reprinted part of Picolo's Informe, the first printed work on California, and an account of the Descent of the Spaniards on the Isle of California in 1683, as well as descriptions of China, Japan, India and other Jesuit outposts around the world. The work is most notable, though, for the Eusebio Francisco Kino map of the American southwest, "Passage by Land to California Discovered by Eusebius Francis Kino a Jesuit" (22.5x20.4 cm). The other maps are of Tierra del Fuego the the Straits of Magellan, and Mission of the Moxos, or Moxes: Settled by the Jesuits in Peru. The plates are a view and plan of Nagasaki, and the Gin-seng plant. Lacking the map of Malabar and the Coromandel Coasts which should be in volume I. Cancel leaves 393-394 and 97-98 inserted after page 98 of volume 1, correcting a printer's omission on p.96 and substantially altering the text on pages 393-4.
