WOLLSTONECRAFT, Mary (1759-1797). A Vindication of the Rights of Woman with strictures on political and moral subjects . London: for J. Johnson 1792. 8° (203 x 125mm.) (Title with slight paper faults and light dampstain in upper part, some light browning and marginal soiling, repair to lower margin of Q6 touching on catch-letter.) Contemporary speckled calf (rebacked, extremities lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION. A Vindication of the Rights of Woman was written rapidly in the autumn of 1791 when Godwin, who was not yet married to Mary Wollstonecraft, had just started work on Political Justice , and Paine himself was writing the second part of the Rights of Man . Her great femininist manifesto was dedicated to Talleyrand, and proved popular enough for Joseph Johnson to print a second edition in the same year. It is of interest that 'End of the first volume' should have been printed on the final page, indicating that a second volume, though never published, was being considered. Windle Mary Wollstonecraft 5; PMM 242.
