WOOLF, Virginia. The Common Reader, London: Hogarth Press, 1925, 8°, FIRST EDITION, original boards with a design in green and brown on the upper cover by Vanessa Bell grey spine (very lightly browned). [Kirkpatrick A8: "1250 copies printed"] Mounted at the front is a 2-page letter from Virginia Woolf to Bruce Richmond on paper headed "52 Tavistock Square" and dated "23rd June" [1925], stating, "In a weak moment I began reading Swift -- am now having undone all the things I ought to be doing. So, unless fate prevents, I will send you the article in the first part of August, to print whenever you like. I hope you won't mind my sending you a copy of my book of essays. In reading them through I often thought of your kindness to an ignorant and innacurate reviewer and at the pleasure it has always been to work with you..." The article referred to in the letter, entitled "Swift's Journal to Stella", was printed in the Times Literary Supplement on 24th September 1925 [Kirkpatrick C268] and was reprinted in revised form in The Common Reader: Second Series (1932).
