[World] LA PÉROUSE, Jean-François-de Galaup Voyage de La Pérouse autour du monde, publié conformément au décret du avril et rédigé par M.L.A. Milet-Mureau [...]. Paris, Imprimerie de la République (by P. D. Dubois-Laverne), an V-5 vol. Text: 4 vol., 4to: portrait-[4]-lxxii-346-[1], [4]-398-[1], [4]-422-[1], [4]-pp. (sl. damp stained in lower margins in vol. II and in 2 upper corners in vol. III, one single spot on text in the begin. of vol. II). Atlas: folio: engr. title and pl. (missing portrait, very pale marg. damp stain on first pl., some sm. piece of lightness of paper map marg. wormholes and wormtrack and after only 2 marg. wormholes, occ. sl. browning or foxing). Text: contemp. marbled calf, gilt-framed covers, gilt-orn. flat spines, gilt edges (rubbed, some boards stronger, 2 corners and sm. part of leather from lower cover missing from vol. II, some wormholes). - Atlas: mod. three-quarter calf, blue paper covers, gilt-orn. spine with raised bands and red leather title label (covers rubbed). Wide-margined copy. First edition relating the famous travel around the world of La Pérouse after the documents he sent to France, in particular through de Lesseps, edited by the French politician Milet-Mureau (1751-on request of the French government. The economic and scientifc expedition left Brest in with the purpose to complete the Pacific discoveries of James Cook and to find a passsage to the North-West of America. They rounded Cape Horn, stopped in Chile, Easter Island, Hawaii, Alaska (first French expedition to visit the country), California, Macau, China and Japan seas and Tonga. Unfortunately the ships "La Boussole" and "L'Astrolabe" wrecked in on the reefs of Vanikoro where the ships were found in We sell also the unsuccessful expedition of Bruni d'Entrecasteaux in search of La Pérouse (cfr. n. 576). Text volumes illustrated with La Pérouse's portrait in frontispiece of vol. I. The Atlas contains an engr. title, a fold. world map, maps (on double and on single pages: Conception Bay, coasts of America and Asia from California to Macau, North of Japan, Kuril islands...), and single plates representing views (Santa Catarina Island, Macau, Mainla Bay...), costumes and inhabitants, plants ("Guilboqui"), autochtons and statues from Easter Island, birds (California quail, promerops), canoes, etc. Ref.
