Edward Hartley Kirkpatrick was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the Oxs and Bucks Light Infantry in January 1900 and saw service in South Africa with the 1st Battalion. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in April 1902 and placed on half-pay in April 1906. Kirkpatrick rejoined the 2nd battalion and was promoted to captain in February 1909 entering France with the BEF in August 1914. 2nd Battalion, Ox and Buck LI formed part of 5th Brigade, 2nd Division of Haig's I Corps and fought at Mons and during the ensuing retreat. It was heavily engaged during the "Miracle of the Marne" and first Ypres before the fighting deadlocked into the form of static trench warfare that characterized WWI. Promoted to temporary major, Kirkpatrick was "mentioned in dispatches" for an action on "14 January 1915." Several months later he was killed in action on May 15, 1915 during the first day's attack on the Festubert salient, a component of the larger Artois Offensive, where 2/Ox and Bucks suffered nearly 400 casualties. Major E.H. Kirkpatrick is remembered on Panel 26, of the Le Touret Memorial. Condition: Stationary has an ink stain on bottom left corner. Medals are good-to-very good.
